Politics, Democracy and Human Rights in Russia

The Government Will Pay for Abuse

with one comment

I won RUR 10,000 (about $300) at Tverskoy District Court yesterday from the Russian government for my illegal 13-day detention at a Dissenters’ March last year. This is the first case when the state is obliged to pay a compensation to an opposition activist arrested at a rally. Of course, the amount is hillarious and I will surely submit an appeal, first to the Moscow City Court and then, if needed, to the European Court for Human Rights.

  1. Congratulations, Oleg! Molodets!

It seems the Kremlin is applying some rather interesting mathematics here. According to their calculations, each day of wrongful imprisonment in a Russian jail is worth less than $23, or less than $1 per hour (just a quarter of the average wage, so if you lost 13 days of work you had a net financial loss of about $117 after the payment).

By this logic, the Kremlin could lock you up for 20 years at a cost of less than $175,000 — pocket change from the Kremlin’s point of view! In fact, if the Kremlin put you at labor, it would likely turn a tidy profit over that period into the bargain.!

It seems the future of Russia under a “president for life” Putin begins to take clear shape.
